Our Registered Texas Longhorn breeding program has 3 objectives:
- Expand the herd and contribute to preserving this iconic part of Texas history
- Produce calves for sale to other ranchers who want to raise and breed Registered Texas Longhorns
- Produce and sell certified Registered Texas Longhorn beef
Chronological calf production:
March 4, 2023 – Linebacker is “springing” but having great difficulty delivering the calf. Eventually, we had to hire some cowboys with horses to rope her to allow me to pull the calf. Unfortunately, this being the first cow to deliver a calf on the farm, the bull calf was still born.
March 15, 2023 – Belle births a heifer, “Iconic”
Unlike Linebacker, Belle stayed close to the house and delivered her calf beside all of the tractor implements. Within 30 minutes of birth the calf is trying to stand and within an hours begins to nurse.
An interesting observation, about twilight we noticed all five cows had encircled Belle’s newborn calf in a position that looks like they are guarding the calf for the night.
March 17, 2023 – Harley births a bull calf “Eljiah’s Legacy”
About mid morning I noticed Harley standing off from the herd and showing signs of “springing”. After observing her for about 45 minutes I was convinced we might have to pull her calf. After gathering the equipment to do so and heading back across the pasture I saw Harley on her side and having contractions. About 20 minutes later we had a new calf on the pasture. first Linebacker and then Belle and her calf Iconic, joined Harley in helping the calf stand and then nurse.
March 17, 2023 – Big Momma births a heifer “Elijah’s Grace”
Our first calving season turned out reasonably well. After rescuing five emaciated heifers, and 5 months later introducing Elijah to them in hopes they would be viable as cows, I believe all five took pregnancy; but, Linebacker lost her calf and we strongly believe Moon slipped her calf. The result is we gained two heifers and one bull calf from the original cows in our first season.
April 28, 2024 – Gracies births a heifer calf “TBD”
Heifer calfs and bull calves acquired from Hico, Texas in the heard with Wreck ’em Rex.
